Pepperstone API Trading: Standard API, FIX API and Requirements

Rated 4.5/5 overall

Yes. Pepperstone offers API trading in two forms. The Standard API allows approved clients to generate an API key and connect their own software to automate trades. The FIX API, a professional protocol used by institutions, is intended for high-volume traders with at least EUR 160 million in monthly trading volume.

Both require a live Pepperstone account and approval before use. Traders who want to automate without building their own software can use Expert Advisors on MT4 and MT5 or cBots on cTrader instead.

API trading is just one part of choosing a broker. Our full Pepperstone review covers the rest.

APIs vary far more than platforms do - what matters is protocol (REST/FIX), rate limits, and whether the API covers your full workflow from data to orders.

Pepperstone API options

An API (application programming interface) lets your software send orders to Pepperstone directly, without a trading platform in between. Pepperstone offers two API routes: the Standard API and the FIX API, each with different entry requirements.

Access to either option is by request, not automatic. Pepperstone reviews each application, so contact them to confirm your eligibility before building a system around their API.

Pepperstone Standard API

The Pepperstone Standard API allows approved clients to generate an API key and connect their software to automate trading. It provides full programmatic control over order execution and market depth data.

You need a live Pepperstone account to request access. Pepperstone reviews each request, so eligibility is not guaranteed.

Pepperstone FIX API

The Pepperstone FIX API uses the Financial Information eXchange (FIX) protocol, the standard used by banks and institutions for ultra-low-latency, high-volume execution. Account holders trading at least EUR 160 million per month can request access to the FIX demo environment first to test their connection.

The volume requirement makes the FIX API inaccessible to almost all retail traders. It is also available to Pepperstone Pro clients through the Active Trader program.

Automation without an API

Most traders can automate their strategies without an API. Pepperstone MT4 and MT5 support Expert Advisors written in MQL4 and MQL5, and Pepperstone cTrader lets you build, backtest, and run cBots in C# via cTrader Automate.

These built-in tools require no approval or minimum volume and run on any live or demo account. To keep them running 24/7, traders can use a VPS, which Pepperstone offers free to clients who meet its volume requirements.

Bottom Line

Pepperstone offers a Standard API for traders building their own systems and a FIX API for institutional-level trading volume. In our assessment, most retail algorithmic traders will be better served by MT4, MT5, or cTrader Automate. The FIX API suits only the highest-volume traders.
